We have metal detectors, security guards, and locker searches, but still we find instances over and over of guns in schools and school violence. It's time that parents learned that the behavior that allows for this is brought from home and no security measures that we put in place can unring that bell. All the physical security measures that come along are only tools. They are there to assist in securing a facility and the people in it. The values of the individuals and the mindset that forms from a gruop of individuals has much more of an impact on crime than any physical measure. Many parents would rather file a lawsuit than accept their responsibility for their childrens behavior. Last month in Chicago, a teen group was on a retreat at a resort along a river.They recieved a free trip, food, and an exceptional educational experience. One night at 1:00 in the morning a group snuck out of their rooms, and broke into a boat house, and launched paddle boats into the river. What the did not know, was that the plugs had been removed from the boats after being winterized, and four students drowned when the boats sunk. The parents immediatly blamed the staff ofr not watching their children, and lawsuits were filed. Do we really have to have someone stay up all night and block the doors? No, but what will happen is that programs like this will be canceled and students will no longer be able to benefit from them.
draft
7:49:00 PM
by Celtic Security
Delete
1 – 1 of 1

_uacct="UA-18003-7";
_uanchor=1;
_ufsc=false;
urchinTracker();
_uff=0;

Teachers with Guns

We all have opinions about gun control, but recently I actually heard an argument proposing iwe allow teachers to be armed in the classroom. It's not that I disagree with the right to bear arms, but teachers have enough to worry about without having to fight crime with one had and write on the board with the other. The job preventing violence is that of the security staff and police assigned to the school. The secondary line of defense rests on the administrations commitment to enforcing a strict security policy. The classroom should be a safe haven where teachers can teach and students learn. While the fault of any offense is on the offender. We as security professionals have a duty to protect and any thing less is unacceptable. I would find it a sad state of affairs to think that we cannot learn to protect our students and teachers without them arming themselves.

All the cameras and alarms in the world are of no use if your school or business does not implement and enforce a comprehensive security program. But how much is too much? Should we send our children off to school with alarm sensors? Should teachers be allowed to carry guns?
